Director of Instrumentation
As the Director of Instrumentation, Dr. Fumiya Watanabe has overseen the construction of the Nanotechnology Center’s electron mciroscopy room. He also is heavily involved in the maintenance, training, policies, rules and regulations of the Nanotechnology Facility Equipments and Instruments. Dr. Watanabe earned his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering in 1990 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he worked as an undergraduate, a graduate student, and as a Post-doctoral Research Assistant/Associate. Afterwards, Dr. Watanabe worked as a Visiting Scientist for IBM Research Division at the Almaden Research Center, as an Assistant Professor for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Kyushu University, Japan, and as a Visiting Scientist at Frederick Seitz Materials Research Lab for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
He has collaborated in publishing over 50 articles, and has conducted presentations in both English and Japanese. Dr. Watanabe’s expertise includes materials science and thin film and surface science as well as instrumentation use and development.
